What is gearbox tuning and what are the benefits ?

Gearbox tuning is where a tuner such as MSK Remapping changes the programming inside the gearbox control unit, often referred to the TCU or Transmission Control Unit. It works in a similar way to tuning an Engine Control Unit or ECU, we take a copy of the software already on the vehicle and we change the permatures to better suit the vehicle and its current set up, it is then written to the TCU and test driven until the desired outcome is reached. The sort of things that we look to change are shift speeds, giving the transmission faster response times between the gears allowing for faster acceleration. Torque limiters which control how much force is allowed from the engine to reach the road, this is particularly important when you start to increase engine power as if you leave the transmission standard, then you wont be extracting the full power from your engine. Anither important change is clamp pressure, when the engine runs more power it has to go through the gearbox and therefore it is important to make sure the clutchs dint start slipping whuich is why we look at clamping pressure to stop that happening. Shift points, when a vehicle has an automatic gearbox it can often feel it takes to long for the gears to shift up or down, through tuning we can changes this to make the gearbox more responsive. Stage 1.5 Tuning

Having heard this term a lot since becoming a tuner and customers asking if they can push the power past what the manufacture specifications state a vehicle can handle while still running an unmodified vehicle has resulted in many questions which we have had to answer. Therefore I will explain this term and the consequences of it and why we steer customers away from this risky decision, but first lets start with a stage 1 tune and stage 2 tune, which are either side of a 1.5 tune. Stage 1 tuning is raising the vehicles performance to the limit of what the factory parts can handle without exceeding them, this is a cost effective way of increasing performance without spending lots of money and labour of changing parts to increase a vehicle performance but most importantly its very safe to do, this is because we stay within the tolerance of what the vehicle is cable of, therefore not risking component failure. Stage 2 on the other hand is where you start to change vehicle components which are uprated to the factory fitted parts, this paired with suitable tuning allows the vehicle to exceed the power that the manufacture states the vehicle can handle, this is different for every vehicle and depending on the performance looking to be gained can result in more or less parts needing to be replaced.

Now a Stage 1.5 is in the middle of a stage 1 and 2, this is when you increase the performance by tuning past what the manufacture states a vehicle can handle without replacing physical components, this is very dangerous and often leads to premature component failure, while this can work for temporary performance gains, it will inevitably lead to costly repair bills or worse engine failure. An example we encountered at MSK was a customer bought a golf MK4 with a tune on the vehicle, after a few months of owning the turbo failed and they had to have it replaced, the a few months after that the turbo went again but resulted in the engine failure and a new engine had to be replaced, during this time they asked us to preform a file diagnosis on the tune as something wasn't right, after investigation we found that the peak boost which should be 2.1 bar for the standard turbo was running at 2.4 bar at peak, this resulted in premature wear on the turbo and unfortunately resulted in the engine being damaged to the point of needing to be replaced. This is why at MSK Remapping we don't recommend a stage 1.5 but if the customer understands the risks involved and signs a waver that we are not responsible for any premature damage to the vehicle, then we will provide this service but always try to recommend and assist in choosing a better route to higher performance.

How Does the EGR system work?

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation or EGR system works by recirculating a small amount of exhaust gas back into the engine's intake manifold, mixing it with the fresh air and fuel mixture. This process lowers the combustion temperature inside the engine by diluting the mixture and reducing the amount of oxygen, which significantly decreases the formation of harmful nitrogen oxide or NOx emissions. The flow of exhaust gas is controlled by an EGR valve, which opens and closes, this is controlled by the Engine Control Unit or ECU and is determined by factors such as engine speed and engine load. On many modern engines, inparticular diesel engines, the exhaust gases pass through a cooler first before entering the intake manifold and then mixing with the fresh air, the gas dilutes the oxygen in the cylinder and acts as a heat sink, slowing the combustion process and lowering temperatures.

What is an EGR Delete?

The EGR Delete process involves the complete removal of the EGR system from the vehicle. The EGR is responsible for reducing emissions by recirculating a portion of exhaust gases into the intake manifold. However there are some compelling benefits associated with an EGR Delete:

The problem is due to an emissions fix by the Volkswagen Audi group that lowers oil pressure in the vehicle at low RPMs, this in turn is causing premature wear and tear on engine internals and we are seeing engines seize on average around 45- 50,000 miles. Now there is other factors that effect this number such as regular maintenance, driving style and transmission but on average 50k miles is when major engine issues are occurring in these engines particularly with the automatic transmission, thats because with an automatic transmission the vehicle changes gear at low rpms which is were the oil pressure issue is most prominent.

What is wrong with the oil pressure?

Oil is used in your engine to lubricate all the moving parts and stops friction and premature wear on those parts, Oil pressure in vital to engine health and the engine builds pressure with the oil pump to force the oil up through the engine and its galleries and oil ways to wear it needs to be, like bearings and crankshaft. The pressure in the TDI is variable and changes based on temperature and rpms. All this information is stored in the Engine Control Unit (ECU) which allows programers like MSK to adapt these values to increase oil pressure in the trouble areas which are causing the premature failure. The trouble areas are predominately below 2,500 rpm where oil pressure doesn't increase along side the increase in rpms like it should. Due to oil pressure not increasing the engine isn't getting properly lubricated and this is the main reason for engine failure in these euro 6 engines.

How do I know If My Vehicle is Effected?

The only way to see if your vehicle is effected by this oil pressure issue is with a diagnostic tool that allows access to the live data reading of the vehicle, then we simply look at the engine oil pressure and the engine rpms, next we see how the oil pressure reacts to the engine rpm increase to see if the problem is present in the vehicle. This whole procedure is relatively straight forward for any mechanic to test and confirm.

What is the Fix?

To fix this issue requires the skills of a remapping company such as MSK Remapping. What we do is access the ECU in the car and reprogram the oil pressure data for the vehicle so that it runs smoothly at all points like it should do. After the remapping has taken place we would then use the diagnostic tools to confirm that the programming has been successful and that the car is in a safe state for driving.

Our Experience of Remapping Jaguars

At MSK Remapping we have the pleasure of working on a great number of different car makes and models, all with little differences when it comes to working on them. In this post we are going to specifically look at our experience with Jaguars. We have had the pleasure of working on a great number of Jaguars now, the Jaguar XE and the Jaguar XF being the most common we have been requested to work with. This in large part is because of the Adblue issues that plague modern cars, including Jaguars, now there can be multiple diffenert causes for these faults but they inevitably happen and normally the first signs is a Engine Management light followed by a countdown timer to engine no start, because of this we have been asked on multiple occasions to provide our Adblue solution for customers with this timer. Our solution is effective and difinative in that once the work is complete you will no longer have any adblue related faults on your vehicle moving forward.

Performance Upgrades

On the other side we have been asked to upgrade the performance of some of our clients Jaguars using our Engine software upgrade and in some cases our Gearbox software upgrade as well. This has raised the performance of these jaguars exceptionally well, on the lower end jaguars of 170BHP to 220BHP and at the top end with higher specification Jaguars with the V6 and V8, we have reached over 400BHP on our software. With our experience of Jaguars we have learnt that these cars can been unpredictable and therefore proper knowledge and care must be taken when doing any form of software on a Jaguar. one of the reasons is because the ignition on most Jaguars will turn off automatically after 10 minutes which if you are in the process of writing new software to the vehicle when this happens, it will corrupt the Engine Control Module or ECM which results in the car being unable to start and a large repair bill for either a new ECM or having the orginal fixed, however at MSK we use state of the art equipment which cant write the software in as little as 3 minutes, long before this issue could happen. Another common issue is that when the upgraded software is being written to the car, the large cooling fan comes on which draws a large amount of voltage from the battery and if the battery falls below 10V on average will automatically tun the ignition off which in turn will corrupt the ECM but at MSK we have a solution, by using the latest in battery support technology we keep the battery voltage at a constant 13V or higher so no matter what voltage draw is on the battery, it will never drop below the required amount for safe programming.

What is a stage 1 remap and how it can benefit your cars performance and economy?

A stage 1 remap in short is were a tuner, such as MSK Remapping, raises your vehicles performance to the maximum that the OEM parts fitted from factory can handle. Before we can explain why we can do this, we first must understand how the manufacture operates. Every manufacture around the world must be able to sell there vehicles in every country and in any conditions in order to make sales and profit, to do this they put what you would call a factory file on the vehicles which allows the car to operate regardless of the conditions, such as fuel quality or hot and cold climates which would effect air density, which intern effects performance. However as a UK based company we know what the conditions are, we know the quality of fuel, the air conditions we have, as well as many other factors, this means as tuners we can raise the vehicles performance to the maximum potential within these conditions and safely within the specifications of what the OEM parts can handle. DPF, EGR and AdBlue Solutions!

One of the biggest problems we find that effects people with modern vehicles is the introduction of new systems like the DPF, EGR and Adblue. These can all be costly items to diagnose and repair, with bills reaching £1000+ on average, and it is unavoidable that these systems will fail over time. The DPF system uses expensive materials that deplete over the course of the vehicles life, they become blocked with carbon and soot if not properly maintained, resulting in costly repairs regardless of the fault. The EGR also common for issues can result in blocked inlet manifolds due to carbon build up as well as coolant leaks if the cooler becomes damaged, both resulting in the EGR needing to be replaced. Finally the one that has become a main issue for all new cars since it became mandatory for the system to be fitted, ADBLUE. The Adblue system can have a large number of issues arise, from pump failure, injector failure, sensor faults, tanks bursting, the fact on some vehicles you have to buy adblue in order to refill the tank and that is only the tip of the metaphorical iceberg. The other problem being is to correctly diagnose an Adblue issue requires large amounts of knowledge and time resulting in very expensive bills, even before the repair bill has been quoted.
